Nerve Pain Inc Sciatica

Our osteopaths help people to reduce nerve pain and improve daily living

Nerves carry messages to our brain from our sense organs (eyes, ears, mouth (taste) touch, joint position) in order to keep us safe. That information gets processed by our brain and triggers reactions in our body, such as making your muscles contract or causing you to experience pain. This is why, when our nerves are irritated we can experience all kinds of sensations such as

  • muscle weakness
  • pins and needles
  • numbness
  • Pain

Nerve pain can be a very distressing experience as the pain from it is unrelenting. Unlike many other injuries it can be hard to find a position of ease. Nerve pain is commonly termed a ‘trapped nerve’ which, in most cases is technically incorrect, as often the nerve is just a little irritated. This is very common and often not anything to worry about. However, if you do have these symptoms, particularly if they are worsening, we would recommend an assessment from one of our osteopaths to assess the cause of your symptoms and provide a treatment plan to manage your pain and restore your movement.

Sciatica is a generic term for irritation of the sciatic nerve. There are many different causes of sciatica, including back pain, disc injuries, pregnancy and buttock muscle spasm, to name a few. It typically causes nerve pain (sharp, shooting pain) down the back or side of one leg and may also present with symptoms such as, pins and needles or numbness, and possibly muscle weakness.
